History of Jews in Krakow started in 13th century. In 1334, King Casimir the Great granted a privilege to Jews from Krakow and Lesser Poland which guaranteed basic rights, including trade and religious freedom. After the fire of the city in 1494 (which the Jews were accused of) most of them left Krakow, moving to nearby Kazimierz which was founded as separate city by King Casimir the Great in 1335. Shortly before the World War II approx. 25% of the whole city population were Jews.In 1941 Germans established Jewish Ghetto in Podgorze Quarter (another part of Krakow) and Jews were forced to move there immediately.

Now, Kazimierz Quarter is considered to be one of the best preserved Jewish district in Europe (unlike to Warsaw where it was completely destroyed). In former Jewish Ghetto you can visit symbolic places like the Pharmacy Under Sign of Eagle – operated as an asylum, providing shelter during deportation etc., the Ghetto Heroes Square and remains of the Ghetto Walls. Very close to this place, there is a legendary Schindler’s Factory and Plaszow Camp.
